October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Loudoun Medical Group encourages women aged 40 and above to talk to their primary care provider about 3D Mammography as a tool for early detection of breast cancer.
In March 2023 – Radiology – a journal of the Radiological Society of North America, concluded that women screened with a 3D Mammography™ exam, generally referred to as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), had improved outcomes compared to those screened with standard digital mammography alone.(1)
Based on analysis from over 2 million screening exams, the study concluded women screened with 3D Mammography can increase breast cancer detection and result in fewer false positives.
The American Cancer Society screening recommendations for women at average breast cancer risk include:
- Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram annually
- Women 45 to 54 to schedule a mammogram annually
- Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year or annually as they choose. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.
If you are an established patient with Loudoun Medical Group, call (571) 375-8601 to schedule your annual mammogram at LMG Imaging to screen for breast cancer. LMG Imaging accepts referrals from Loudoun Medical Group physicians and Advanced Practice Providers. To learn more about 3D mammography and other diagnostic services visit LMGImagingCenter.com.
